// the problem

Sound familiar?

  • Every week there's a new model, framework or “must-learn” tool — and you can't tell what actually matters.
  • You've done courses and tutorials, but still don't know what to learn next, or in what order.
  • You're not sure how much maths, ML or DSA you really need before you touch LLMs.
  • Your projects are chatbots that wrap a single API call — and you can tell reviewers aren't impressed.
  • You can build a RAG demo, but not one you can measure, secure and deploy.
  • You don't know what AI Engineer interviews actually test, so you can't prepare for them.
  • Free resources are everywhere, but finding good, current ones takes longer than learning from them.

// the fix

What changes with The AI Engineering Roadmap 2026

  • 8 phases in a clear order — Python & software engineering, data & SQL, ML, deep learning, GenAI & LLM engineering, deployment & MLOps, system design, and portfolio & jobs.
  • For every topic: what to learn, one place to learn it and a practice task — with 132 links checked for this edition, almost all free.
  • Clear lines on what to implement, what to understand and what's safe to skip — including exactly how much maths you need.
  • 4 portfolio projects that show real engineering: a churn prediction API, a policy Q&A assistant with RAG and citations, a data-analyst agent with guardrails, and a ticket-triage platform.
  • A “simplest approach that works” guide (prompting → tools → RAG → agents → fine-tuning) and a manageable 2026 stack, so you stop chasing frameworks.
  • What each interview round tests and how to prepare, plus AI system-design questions and a reference RAG / agent architecture.
  • A 24-week study plan, 16-week accelerated plans for data scientists and software engineers, and a milestone tracker.

About this guide

AI Engineering is the most talked-about role in tech right now — and the hardest to plan for. New models, frameworks and "must-learn" tools appear every week. Most roadmaps are long lists of technologies with no order, no projects and no way to tell when you're ready for the next step.

The SkillPilot AI Engineering Roadmap 2026 is built the other way round. It's a 16-page, step-by-step path from Python foundations to production LLM apps, RAG systems and AI agents — and on to a portfolio and interviews. For every topic it tells you what to learn, one place to learn it and how to practise, and every phase ends with a milestone you can put on GitHub.

Inside, you'll find

  • The order that works — 8 phases, from Python & software engineering to GenAI, deployment, system design and getting hired
  • How much maths you really need — what to implement yourself, what to understand, and what's safe to skip
  • When to use prompting, tools, RAG, an agent or fine-tuning — choose the simplest approach that works, not the trendiest
  • 4 portfolio projects that show engineering, not another chatbot that wraps one API call
  • A reference architecture for a production RAG / agent application, and the questions to answer in every AI system design
  • What each interview round tests — coding, practical Python, ML and LLM fundamentals, AI system design, project deep dives — and how to prepare

Built to be used, not just read

Every link is clickable and was checked for this edition — 132 of them, all free unless tagged free tier or paid. A readiness checkpoint tells you when to start the LLM phase, a progress tracker lets you tick off each milestone, and each phase points to the free SkillPilot practice workbook for it.

The honest part

No roadmap can guarantee a job or a salary. The 24-week plan assumes about 15–20 hours a week and basic Python; complete beginners should plan for 9–12 months. What this roadmap does is stop you wasting months on the wrong things — and make your skills real and visible.

Key features

  • 16-page PDF with every link clickable
  • A milestone at the end of every phase
  • A readiness checkpoint before the LLM phase
  • A “choose the simplest approach” decision guide
  • Links to the free SkillPilot practice workbook for each phase
  • Free — instant download, plus a link in your email

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free?

Yes. Enter your name and email, download it straight away, and we'll email you the link too. Almost every resource it links to is free as well — the few that aren't are tagged FREE TIER or PAID.

How long will it take?

The suggested plan is 24 weeks at about 15–20 hours a week, if you already write basic Python. Complete beginners should expect 9–12 months. Data scientists and ML engineers can follow a 16-week accelerated plan, and software engineers a 16–18-week one.

I'm a beginner. Is this for me?

Yes, if you can program a little. Follow every phase in order — each ends with a milestone, and a checkpoint before the LLM phase tells you when you're ready to move on.

Do I need to buy courses to follow it?

No. Every row lists one resource, and one is enough — the links are alternatives, not a reading list. All are free unless tagged FREE TIER or PAID.

Will this get me a job?

No roadmap can guarantee a job or a salary — hiring depends on your market, experience and timing. What it does is focus your time on the skills and projects AI Engineer roles look for, and show you how to present them.

How is it different from the Machine Learning Roadmap?

The Machine Learning Roadmap takes you from Python to real ML projects. This one goes further into building and shipping LLM applications, RAG systems and AI agents, plus deployment, system design and interviews — and points to the ML Roadmap if you want a deeper ML track.
